Turkey has tested Baykar's KALKAN Vertical Take-Off and Landing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (VTOL UAV) from two different naval platforms, TCG Anadolu and TCG Burgazada, demonstrating the system's potential for maritime intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
Turkey Tests KALKAN From Two Naval Platforms
The Turkish Ministry of National Defence announced that KALKAN successfully completed test flights from both TCG Anadolu and TCG Burgazada. The tests demonstrate that the aircraft can operate from different types of naval platforms without requiring a conventional runway.
The ability to take off and land vertically is particularly important for naval operations. Unlike conventional fixed-wing UAVs, a VTOL aircraft can operate from a relatively small flight deck, allowing smaller warships to deploy an unmanned aircraft without the need for a catapult or arresting system.
The test is also notable because it was conducted on two very different ships. TCG Anadolu provides a large flight deck designed for aviation operations, while TCG Burgazada is an Ada-class corvette. Demonstrating KALKAN on both platforms points toward a potentially broader use of VTOL UAVs across the Turkish Navy.
For naval forces, a relatively small UAV can provide persistent surveillance over a much larger area than the ship's own sensors alone. It can also extend the ship's visual and electronic awareness beyond the horizon and provide additional information for maritime operations.
KALKAN DİHA's Role
KALKAN is designed primarily for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Its VTOL capability allows it to transition between vertical take-off and landing and conventional forward flight, combining the operational flexibility of a helicopter-style launch with the endurance advantages of a fixed-wing aircraft.
Baykar lists an endurance of up to six hours and a communication range exceeding 70 kilometers. With a maximum take-off weight of 78 kilograms and a 3-kilogram payload capacity, KALKAN is considerably smaller than Turkey's larger UCAV platforms such as Bayraktar TB2 or TB3.
This smaller size is not necessarily a disadvantage. For naval operations, the ability to deploy a compact UAV from smaller ships can be more valuable than carrying a much larger aircraft that requires a specialized aviation platform.

Our Assessment
The tests on both TCG Anadolu and TCG Burgazada suggest that Turkey is looking beyond a single large-deck UAV carrier concept. Smaller VTOL systems could potentially distribute persistent ISR capabilities across a wider range of naval platforms.
The significance of KALKAN may therefore be less about its size and more about where it can operate.
