Finland, Turkey boost land attack capabilityJane's has learned that Turkey has contracted for the 50 AGM- 84K Stand-off Land Attack Missile - Expanded Response (SLAM-ER) weapons that it requested in April, making it the first European customer for the missile and only the second outside the US.
In a separate agreement, Finland has signalled its intention to field air-to-ground weapons for the first time since the end of the Second World War and may also become a SLAM-ER user.
Turkey's acquisition of the SLAM-ER is significant because the missile will, for the first time, be integrated on Lockheed Martin F-16 multirole fighter aircraft.
While it is viewed in some quarters as a system approaching the end of its design life, Boeing and the US Navy have made consistent efforts to keep the AGM-84K effective.
