Under the ALCAS Program, TAI Delivers the First Work Package 1.3.5 Central Wing Box Front Spar Subassembly to Airbus

Within the framework of Advanced Low-Cost Aircraft Structures (ALCAS) Program, under the platform of European Union’s Framework Programs, the first “Work Package 1.3.5 Central Wing Box Front Spar Subassembly,” designed and produced by TAI, was delivered to Airbus on February 7, 2008. The subassembly, which is 3.5 m x 2.0 m, weighs 85 kilograms.

The objective of the ALCAS Program, which is included under the “Aerospace and Space” theme under the 6th Framework Program of the European Union, is to reduce the operating costs of relevant European aerospace products, through the cost effective application of carbon fibre composites to aircraft primary structure, taking into account systems integration.

The project will seek to reduce aircraft operating costs by realizing the weight saving potential of composite materials, by reducing the manufacturing costs of composite components, and by reducing maintenance costs. This project will include new design concepts and methods that exploit the full potential of these materials, as well as novel manufacturing and assembly processes.

The project will be organized into four technical platforms:

-- The Airliner Wing platform covers inner wing and centre box of a large civil airliner, focusing on the centre box to lateral wing root joint, the landing gear and pylon integration and the highly loaded, complex curvature lower cover.

-- The Airliner Fuselage platform addresses key fuselage challenges and complex design features, including large cut-outs and large damages in curved panels, keel beam and landing gear load introduction, tyre impact damage, post-buckling and elementary crash analysis.

-- The Business Jet Wing platform focuses on reducing cost by combining parts into an integrated wing structure, includes architecture studies to identify the best wing joint configuration.

-- The Business Jet Fuselage platform studies double curved rear fuselage with sandwich shell concept and VTP/HTP and engine integration.

A Project Management and Training platform will integrate the technical activities and ensure a coordinated approach to generic tasks such as knowledge capture, dissemination and exploitation. Under the program, which is coordinated by Airbus-UK, the four platforms are shared by Airbus-UK, Airbus-Germany and Dassault-France.

50% of the budget of the program, which is carried out by a consortium of 60 shareholders, and in which representatives from 18 countries participate, is provided by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programs. Furthermore, ALCAS’ work packages, which are in the responsibility of TAI, are supported under TÜBİTAK-TEYDEB.

Taking part in two different work packages of the Airliner Wing Platform, TAI is responsible from the research, development, design and production of “1.2.7 Lateral Wingbox-Rib 09” and “1.3.5 Central Wing Box Front Spar.”

Since the beginning of the program (February 2005), TAI’s design and development team has been carrying out its activities, in coordination with related manufacturing groups, on easy manufacturing, high strength and light products

TAI, which delivered the “Work Package 1.3.5 Central Wing Box Front Spar Subassembly” on February 7, 2008, aims to realize the delivery of “Work Package 1.2.7 Lateral Wingbox-Rib 09,” which is an advanced and innovation level composite design, in the third quarter of 2008.
