ASELSAN GÖKSUR Brings New Air Defence Capability to Turkish Warships

 

ASELSAN is highlighting the growing capabilities of GÖKSUR, its naval point-defence missile system designed to protect Turkish warships against demanding low-altitude aerial threats.

The system is particularly focused on sea-skimming anti-ship missiles and other targets flying close to the surface, where the limited reaction time makes naval air defence especially challenging

Designed for the Last Layer of Naval Defence

GÖKSUR is being developed by ASELSAN in cooperation with TÜBİTAK SAGE as a close air-defence system for naval platforms.

The system uses a new-generation imaging infrared seeker and supports both angled and vertical launch configurations. Its published capabilities include 360-degree threat engagement, multiple-target interception and mid-course guidance through a data link. 

From Angled Launch to Vertical Launch

One of GÖKSUR's notable features is its flexibility in launch configuration.

The missile can be launched from an angled launcher or from the GÖKSUR 100-N vertical launch system. This allows the system to be adapted to different naval platforms and ship configurations. 

ASELSAN's 2025 annual report states that GÖKSUR successfully conducted its first firing from a surface platform. Following further engineering work, a GÖKSUR IIR missile launched from the GÖKSUR 100-N vertical launcher successfully intercepted a low-altitude sea-skimming target.

Why Sea-Skimming Defence Matters

Anti-ship missiles flying only a few metres above the sea can significantly reduce the time available for a warship's defensive systems to detect, track and engage them.

This makes the final defensive layer particularly important. GÖKSUR is designed to operate in precisely this environment, providing a short-range interception capability against threats that penetrate the ship's outer defensive layers.

Our Assessment

GÖKSUR's importance lies less in its maximum range than in the role it fills within a layered naval air-defence architecture.
A modern warship cannot rely on a single air-defence system. Long-range missiles, medium-range systems and close-in weapons must work together to create overlapping defensive layers.

GÖKSUR is designed to become the missile-based last line of defence against threats that make it through those outer layers.
